An Arkansas Judge Sent A Cancer Patient To Debtors’ Prison Over Bounced Checks

An Arkansas Judge Sent A Cancer Patient To Debtors' Prison Over Bounced Checks:

Lee Robertson’s trouble began in late 2009, when he was undergoing his first stint of chemotherapy to battle the pancreatic cancer that had made it impossible for him to work. In the course of two weeks, Robertson wrote 11 checks at stores near his home for small amounts ranging from $5 to $41.

Robertson started off owing a few stores about $200. Six years and seven arrests later, in a closed courtroom in Sherwood District Court in Arkansas, Judge Milas “Butch” Hale sentenced the cancer patient to 90 days in jail. His crime? Owing the court $3,054.51….

He’s not alone. Nikki Petree, 40, was charged for bouncing a single check for $28.93… She has been arrested in connection with that charge on at least seven occasions, and been jailed for more than 25 days. She’s paid at least $640 to the city.

Discovering #PlantsOnPink with Painter Stella Maria Baer

To see more colorful botanical posts on Instagram, browse the #PlantsOnPink hashtag.

Every week, we’re showcasing some of the most creative community hashtags on Instagram. Today we’re highlighting #PlantsOnPink. “I like the hashtag because it is a meditation on color,” explains painter Stella Maria Baer (@stellamariabaer). “I spend a lot of time thinking about the colors of the desert in the Southwest where I grew up. Adobe walls often show up in the #PlantsOnPink photographs, some from my hometown of Santa Fe, New Mexico.” The cactus gardens of Arizona and California are the perfect place to snap a photo and contribute to the hashtag, but for those who can’t travel so far, Stella assures us: any pink wall will do.

What dark structures arise from the Pelican Nebula? Visible as a bird-shaped nebula toward the constellation of a bird (Cygnus, the Swan), the Pelican Nebula is a place dotted with newly formed stars but fouled with dark dust. These smoke-sized dust grains formed in the cool atmospheres of young stars and were dispersed by stellar winds and explosions. Impressive Herbig-Haro jets are seen emitted by a star on the right that is helping to destroy the light year-long dust pillar that contains it. The featured image was scientifically-colored to emphasize light emitted by small amounts of ionized nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur in the nebula made predominantly of hydrogen and helium. The Pelican Nebula (IC 5067 and IC 5070) is about 2,000 light-years away and can be found with a small telescope to the northeast of the bright star Deneb.
