A father reportedly learned somebody murdered his son in Michigan after stumbling upon a photo of the man’s dead arm on June 20 that went viral.
“I couldn’t believe it was him, I couldn’t believe it,” Jeff Davis, the father, told WJBK. “That’s how I found out, through Facebook.”
Davis said he had just celebrated Father’s Day with his son, 39-year-old Jeff Hagler. His body was found less than a day later.
“It’s sad to find out your son you’ve just seen – and the next thing you know he is in the back of a car,” Davis said.
“I’m going to miss you,” Davis added, to his now deceased son. “And I love you.”
Hagler worked as a local auto part supplier and was also a father to three children, one of whom is reportedly only a few months old.
Somebody took the photo after they found his arm hanging out of the trunk of an abandoned white Buick Century.
The man had reportedly been beaten and shot three times before being left behind in a car.
After social media users shared the pictures thousands of times, Hagler’s relatives recognized the car and notified police.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the murder; they are searching for suspects and examining possible motives behind the crime.
While Hagler had reportedly served time in prison for drugs in his 20s, his family said he has since lived a clean life. They do not believe his past was related to his murder.
Instead, they believe it was a random crime likely motivated by robbery.
“Someone said he got a phone call from a girl,” Davis said about what his son was doing before his death. “And that was the last of that.”
However, police said they believe there may have been a deeper motive. They urge anybody with further information to call Detroit police at (313) 596-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
This is not the first time authorities have learned of a murder because of social media.
The murder of Antonio Perkins, 28, was posted and captured live on Facebook, The Root reported.
Perkins was taking a video of himself drinking tequila in Chicago, Illinois, with friends when he was reportedly shot and killed on June 15.
