Clinton, Trump now neck-and-neck in Electoral College projection

New analysis from Reuters released Saturday finds Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump are basically even in terms of Electoral College support. Were the election held today, it “could end in a photo finish,” perhaps similar to the contested George W. Bush vs. Al Gore race in 2000.

Where Trump was previously believed to trail Clinton’s Electoral College count considerably, Reuters now considers Florida — with the fourth most electors of all 50 states — a likely win for the Republican nominee. Reuters also updated its projections for swing states Pennsylvania (from likely Clinton win to toss-up) and Ohio (from toss-up to likely Clinton win).

Even with this shakeup, neither candidate comes close to 50 percent support nationwide: Clinton has a slight lead of 42 percent national support to Trump’s 38 percent.

U.S. troops are supporting Iraqi efforts to capture the last big ISIS stronghold in Iraq

Several hundred American troops have arrived at the Qayyarah air base near Mosul, Iraq, to assist Iraqi forces working to capture the last major Iraqi city held by the Islamic State. The U.S.-Iraqi attack will begin as early as October; at present, the coalition forces are planning their approach, which will involve first seizing smaller towns near the city’s outskirts.

The Department of Defense “has made clear that our forces in Iraq are in harm’s way,” said the Pentagon’s press secretary, Peter Cook, on Thursday. “Everyone who is serving there is in a dangerous situation.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. will shift additional air power and military personnel into Syria, where ISIS is also active, to target militants as required by the recent cease-fire deal with Russia. Senior military officials told the Associated Press those additional troops and equipment would be new arrivals to the Mideast, as the Pentagon does not want to detract from anti-ISIS efforts elsewhere in the region.

Larry David says thinking about a Donald Trump win is like ‘contemplating your own death’

Donald Trump winning the White House this November would be pretty, pretty, pretty bad, said Seinfeld creator and Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David in a New York Times piece printed Saturday.

“The possibility of that is too horrifying to broach,” David wrote in an email to the Times. “It’s like contemplating your own death.” Asked whether he ever does, in fact, contemplate his death, the famously neurotic comic answered, “I can’t go there.”

David’s comments were part of a larger feature on once-confident Hillary Clinton supporters who now worry their candidate could actually lose. The Times reports that threats to move to Canada are totally more serious this time around, but come on, we all know only Kramer likes Canadian football.
