Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPwilderness

Weekend Hashtag Project is a series featuring designated themes and hashtags chosen by Instagram’s Community Team. For a chance to be featured on the Instagram blog, follow @instagram and look for a post every week announcing the latest project.

Get outside! The goal this weekend is to make photos and videos that celebrate our wild world — through landscapes, animal images and surprising moments in nature. Here’s how to get started:

  • Find a perspective that best captures a sense of place — whether the grand view from atop a mountain or looking up at towering trees from deep within a lush forest.
  • Photograph during the golden hour — early in the morning or right before sunset — to add a magiclike quality to your images. You’ll find that a landscape transforms depending on the time of day that you shoot.
  • If you’re making video, record ambient sound. Think lapping ocean waves, the sound of crunching footsteps on a hike or crickets buzzing at night.

PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPwilderness hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

The goal this weekend is to make photos and videos that spring to life with your own original drawings. Here’s how to get started:

  • Transform any photo or video from your Instagram story into a doodle masterpiece by mixing and matching the built-in drawing tools and then share directly to your feed!
  • Don’t feel confined to a pencil and paper: Experiment with drawing in the sand, foggy windows or any other canvas that you find. Use Boomerang to capture a satisfying final touch, like the last loop to close a flower.
  • Set your phone or camera on a steady surface (or a tripod) and envision the fixed frame as a blank page to be filled. Think big: If you point your lens at an empty sidewalk, fill the entire frame with chalk art.
  • Challenge yourself to try something new. For example, have a friend record your attempt to draw with your eyes closed or draw an urban scene without letting yourself lift your drawing utensil from the surface you’re drawing on. Be sure your video shows the context that makes your drawing experiment unique.

PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPdrawit hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

We know. We can’t believe it’s back-to-school season either. Before students in many parts of the world hit the books, the goal this weekend is to make photos and videos celebrating bound books. Here’s how to get started:

  • Show us your favorite spots to read, like your favorite chair in a local library, the place where your book club meets or the one tree you love opening a new book underneath.
  • Look for readers in the wild — whether on the subway, in a park or anywhere else people dive into their books.
  • Let your favorite books take on a life of their own as the players in an Instagram story. Be sure to share directly to your feed to add a more personal touch to your submission.

PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPbookworm hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

Get ready for the Summer Olympics in Rio! In honor of the coming weeks of competition and worldwide celebration, the goal this weekend is to make photos and videos inspired by hard work and personal goals — like this one by @tktk. Here’s how to get started:

  • Whether you’re trying to master a headstand or a foul shot, share a video showing where you are in the process.
  • Do you have a mentor, a partner in crime, or someone who looks up to you? Introduce your followers to who inspires you to keep going.
  • Achieving excellence is all about persistence — and it isn’t always glamorous. Use video to go behind the scenes of your routine: Show the process of taping up your feet before slipping on dance shoes, or create a blooper reel from a training session.
  • Don’t forget to show pride in your efforts: Use drawing tools to add a gold medal to your story, and encourage others to do the same!

For more ideas and inspiration, check out our story on @instagram to see how people are making their gold-worthy submissions.

PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPgoforgold hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

Going for the Gold with Pole Vaulter Fabiana…

Going for the Gold with Pole Vaulter Fabiana Murer

#BeyondTheGames is a series that spotlights inspiring women athletes in the Instagram community who are telling their Olympic story. To learn more about Fabiana, follow @fabianamurer on Instagram.

Brazilian pole vaulter Fabiana Murer (@fabianamurer) is set to return to the Olympics in 2016 and couldn’t be happier to have a chance to claim her first medal. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to compete in Rio, especially because I’ll have the Brazilian fans supporting me,” the 35-year-old says. Fabiana competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but failed to qualify for the 2012 London games. 2016 is all about fighting for the medal she’s dreamed of taking home. “Of course, now the motivation is so much bigger because it’s happening in my country,” she says.
