Smoking tobacco has been a contentious social issue for a long time. Conflicts of interest of governments to tax revenues over health as well as more recently issues regarding the harm reduction benefits of electronic cigarettes, all combine to give a muddled front to what should be a clear issue. Smoking tobacco will kill you! But not only that, it will debilitate you, reducing your quality of life for decades before you finally succumb. The most unnerving aspect of smoking tobacco may be however, the uncoordinated nature of the help available to people who wish to stop smoking. The information trail is littered with misinformation laid down by tobacco and pharmaceutical companies who put profits before public interest.
People usually start smoking in their teenage years. Social peer pressure, parental influence and a teenage need to push boundaries are just a few reasons for initial smoking behaviour. Over the following years, the addiction/habit to nicotine becomes entwined with the growth of social behaviours that are integral to the lifestyle of the individual. The cigarette with the first cup of coffee of the day, the post meal cigarette or smoking with the consumption of alcohol in a social setting, are all everyday behaviours that become engrained into the life of everyone who smokes.
In a statement today by Brisbane Hypnotherapist Maureen Hamilton who expands on the need to break down these psychological triggers and behavioural issues, to allow a person to free themselves from smoking tobacco for good.
She commented, “The issues involved with stopping smoking are not dissimilar to those of losing weight and obesity. They contain a physical addiction to a substance such as nicotine for smokers and sugar for overweight people. (Sugar being more addictive than Cocaine). But more important than these chemical addictions are the long term psychological triggers that have built up over many years around the use of the substance that needs to be eradicated. You can’t simply put on a patch of nicotine and expect to be able to quit smoking. Taking away the social behaviours that have built up over years, is a much more powerful barrier than the nicotine withdrawal. Hypnotherapy has proven to be a successful method of retraining the brain and breaking the links between smoking and perceived ’pleasureable’ habitual behaviour. As part of a detailed plan, it can help eradicate smoking from a person’s life without the stresses that can ultimately lead to a person failing to quit for the long term”
